Deemed as \u2018essential\u2019, construction work has been permitted throughout the pandemic. And although 41% of staff were furloughed during the first wave of infections, this rapidly reduced to 29% by May 2020 and \u2013 for most companies \u2013 day-to-day operations have continued.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

But, it certainly hasn\u2019t been easy.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Whilst they haven\u2019t been forced to shut, building sites have faced a range of unprecedented issues, from keeping employees safe to managing disruptions to the supply chain and maintaining productivity. And contractors have had to rethink the way they work, developing new strategies and re-considering their health and safety protocols, to help them adapt to the \u2018new normal\u2019.<\/p>

For most companies,\u00a0digitalisation has been the key<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

It\u2019s fair to say, the construction sector has been very slow to embrace technology. But COVID-19 has acted as a catalyst for change and many contractors have begun to realise its benefits. Here we take a look at just a few ways in which digital solutions have helped over the last 12 months.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

1. Productivity<\/h3>

Low-productivity was an existing issue within the construction industry. In fact, there has been no improvement in this area for decades \u2013 and the pandemic has only made the situation worse.<\/p>

According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), construction activity fell by 2.6% in Q1 of 2020, and by 5.9% in March. The Construction Products Association has also estimated that construction output fell by 25% last year, with the largest falls in private housing and commercial projects.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

However,\u00a0digitalisation\u00a0<\/strong>has<\/em>\u00a0helped to minimise this problem as much as possible.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

2. Safety of staff<\/h3>

Not only can\u00a0digitalisation in construction<\/strong>\u00a0improve productivity, but it also enhances safety. And at a time when staff safety and welfare is paramount, this benefit cannot be overlooked.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

In the last year, many building sites have swapped traditional access solutions for \u2018contactless\u2019 biometric entry \u2013 such as that included with the\u00a0MSite Workforce App<\/a>. This uses the existing biometric capabilities of each site worker\u2019s smartphone, including facial recognition and fingerprint technology, to prove their identity and verify their site credentials. And as there is no need for them to touch a communal device, it significantly reduces the spread of germs and pathogens.<\/p>

3. Communication<\/h3>

With people told to \u2018work from home\u2019 wherever possible,\u00a0all<\/em>\u00a0sectors have faced communication challenges throughout the pandemic. Most have adopted conference tools \u2013 such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom \u2013 to stay in touch with their staff. But for construction, it\u2019s not that simple.<\/p>

Construction companies often have multiple sites up and down the country, and can employ hundreds if not thousands of workers at any one time. Keeping in contact with them all is difficult. Which is why, once again, many have embraced a digital solution to overcome this problem.<\/p>
